Champagne: Epernay - Paris
The Champagne tour can also be done from Epernay to Paris. Starting in Epernay has the advantage that you don't have to wait a week before you can taste the real stuff! And entering Paris on your own barge with a glass of sparkling whine certainly has a charm of its own.
Epernay is easily accessible by train with a one hour ride from Paris.
Character of the tour
This one week tour along the Marne leads to Epernay and Reims while crossing the steeper slopes that suit the moderate to experienced biker. Daily average of the whole tour 45 Km or 4 hrs by bike.
Summary
Day 1 Saturday, Epernay Arrival at the barge, try-out of the bikes, Champagne aboard!
Day 2 Sunday, Visit of Reims. After a short train trip we visit the ancient town of Reims. Until 1825 the coronation of all kings took place in the cathedral of Reims.
Day 3 Monday, Epernay - Damery Through Champagne vineyards to the little village situated in a picturesque part of the river Marne.
Day 4 Tuesday, Damery - Chateau Thierry A ride along the river today with a few hills. Visit to park and memorial of the Great War, World War.
Day 5 Wednesday, Chateau Thierry – La Ferté sous Jouarre,
Day 6 Thursday, La Ferté sous Jouarre - Meaux - Lagny. From Champagne into the Brie region, ride into Meaux, known for its unfinished cathedral but mostly as the capital of the soft white Brie cheese!
Day 7 Friday, Lagny - Paris, From Lagny we bike along the meandering Marne to the outskirts of Paris, where we will embark for a river cruise to our mooring in the centre of Paris.
Day 8 Saturday, Epernay. Tour ends after breakfast.
